Sorry about your hand. Is Beau normally the biting kind, we ask because the only time Socks ever bit Mommy was when he had an injured shoulder and apparently when Mommy touched it it hurt. We don't want to alarm you but is it possible Beau is hurt?
We also agree with the Fur Kids Mom, Beau is just sad, scared and confused. We are sure given time and love he will LOVE U too.
Rose, not to worry, but there is a LONG line of humans and cats out there who love you for all you are doing to help out poor little lost Beau. We know you know it will take time for him to relax and adjust and we are sure in time he will. That hand looks pretty nasty too! Glad you are on meds for that. (((HUGS))) to all!
Cat bites are notoriously painful. Hope you are able to keep the hand clean and sterile. Not easy with one hand. (Been there!) Your state medical care seems to be less than desirable if they don't allow for emergencies. But watch for signs of cellulitis. Glad you're on a bacterial med so you can heal.
Well, we'er so glad to see Beau has come out and is sitting on the chair!! Rose, take it slow with him...don't try to force him out from under the bed...let Beau deal with all of this on his own terms. He's still so scared and confused. Maybe put Cathy's pillow on that chair for him. And the staring...not a good thing to do with a cat. Try the slow blink...when he's staring at you, blink your eyes slowly at him. It shows him you are not the enemy. Eventually, hopefully, he should slow blink back at you which means he realizes your not the enemy.
Gosh that hand does look mighty sore. Sure hope it is healing up. I think I would just ignore Beau for a little while and let him just chill for a little while. Just remember what he has been through. I am so glad you have him there with you and as someone else said, we are so grateful to you for taking him in and doing as much as you can for him. He just doesn't trust anyone right now and would like to know where in the world is his Momma. Take care of that hand. The last thing Beau needs is to have something happen to you. Take care.
Oh dear - I do hope your hand gets better quickly! I know how it is to try to wrangle an unhappy kitty. My mom has ferals that need occasional vetting, flea medicine, etc. Since she wants them to think of her as the Nice Human, I'm the one who gets to capture the feral and stuff it in the carrier. I have a technique that involves a thick towel. Poor Beau! He must be so confused. The best thing for him now would probably be a routine. Once he sees everything settle down to the same thing at the same time, he'll feel more in control. Then he'll happily take over your house like a kitty should. :)
I must say my heart leaped in joy when i saw that video and realized he is finally little by little relaxing. You mentioned it is the feliway. I hope you have the defuser in the room, so he can relax all the time. If not the spray is just as good. You two will end up making great friends. Beau just needs time. By the way the singing was much better than what I would have done :) Thanks for caring for poor little orphan Beau.
I came back to try the video again, as it's not working for me. Still. ::pout:: Regarding your added note - I'm sure nobody wants you to drag Beau out from under the bed. You did an admirable (and painful) job just getting him from Barbara's place to yours! Karen
Poor scared Beau. He has been uprooted from his home and his beloved mom. Everything is strange, well, different. Cats abhor change. And he is in mourning. Is it possible that he was tossed on the flight and could be physically hurting? Time, he needs time.
Island cats mom is righr, don't stare at him, that is threatening. Blink. I would go in the room and talk to him but not try to interact, just let him know you are there. Thank you so much for helping him! He will come around, the name of the game is Patience.
we knew that Beau would need time - Mom Cathy told us many times that Beau hated anyone but her and would grrr and growl at everyone who came in her house. BUT, we know that once he's over it, he will be better. we's sorry you gotted hurt and we hopes your hand feels better soon QM. You're doing a very wonderful job with him - he's made progress coming out and laying on chair. It looks like he's giving you the "this is MINE now, don't even think about taking it back" look. That's a good thing.
In checkout line @ grocery when you called. Returned call & am waiting but immediately got on here when I got home to see if I could find out what's going on. I TOTALLY agree with the slow blinks. Also, head downward wasn't mentioned (submissive behavior). He needs this - to know he's in control. Also, what I've found to work w/ kitties through the years is the same gentle head toss that horses do - and people do back to horses when getting to know each other and/or talking and greeting each other. Since you're also a horse person, I thought you might want to keep that in mind. Beau absolutely has to regain trust in people and in life on his terms. No doubt about it. I was SO upset when I saw the 1st pics on here but was slowly relieved a bit when I saw him in your chair. Those were relaxed & "I'm getting in control" pics. Very encouraging. The pics of your hand were horrible & I'm SO glad Jan sent meds. Be good about them! Cipro is powerful & an extremely important drug to keep in your future arsenal! I'll look to hear from you & if I don't, I'll call. -Aunt T.
This is A. Nonny Mouse speaking, and I'm trying not to yell. Six of you have written encouraging, upbeat comments. The rest of you...I'm glad these comments aren't meant to encourage me to do something.
Sorry, I have been doing a slow burn all day. Our Rose is not an idiot; she probably had cats before some of you were born; she has also had dogs and horses. The more I write the more crabilated I become.
Try to think like Thumper--if you can't say something nice(and this includes the snarky comments wrapped in faint praise), PLEASE DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL!!! The majority of you are doing way more harm than good.
I would like to say that I'm sorry if I offended some of you--but I won't.
Yay - the video finally worked for me! I knew if I kept trying, it would eventually give in. Made me smile. Anyway - just read the Meezers' comment. Beau's always growled at visitors? You've got yourself a Grr! The instant Grr hears the doorbell, or a knock, she starts growling and hissing. It's actually kind of funny (though we pretend to take her attitude very seriously, of course *wink*). I really love the expressive ones. :) Karen
So great to talk to you on the phone! I know he's doing great and moving in the proper direction! And yes, you & I know he wasn't injured. Sometimes the written word doesn't come across quite the same as the spoken word. Just remember the concerns of others were out of love. ---I can't tell you how great it was to see him lounged out in that chair with those front legs stretched out! He'd never do that if he wasn't feeling better!!! We'll keep in touch via blogs, phone, etc. Know that I'm thinking about you always! Aunt T.
Just realized I was signed in as myself instead of Grr, Midnight & Cocoa on that last post. Probably should've done that on the first two also, huh? I'm a little scattered today!
You left a comment for Grr, and I e-mailed a response without even thinking about the fact that it was going to "noreply-comment @ blogger.com"! Well now, guess you didn't get that e-mail! And why the heck don't I have your e-mail address? Because I've been out of touch with everyone for so long? AH-HA! That must be it! If you e-mail me at kch917 @ sbcglobal.net, I'll resend the response. :) Karen
Progress! You are doing great, Rose! With all of our mom's bad cat bites (two) tetanus shots are very important. Hope you've had one in the past ten years. That chair sure does look comfy...and the bed too!
I don't know Rose, I don't know Beau, I hardly know what happened to get everything to this point, but I do know that if someone reads this blog regularly and takes a moment to comment, it's because they feel tremendous support for Rose, love for Beau, concern for Barbara and frustration that we can't be RIGHT THERE helping out by bandaging a hand, cleaning a house, paying attention to the other critters who are sacrificing their time with Rose so that Beau might thrive, and if the comments might come across as (veiled) scolding or anything other than encouraging, it's not meant to (and thank you from my heart, A Nonny Mouse, for bringing that to our attention. Sometimes in our eagerness to help and share what we know about cats, we don't realize how the written word will come across).
Rose, you are our HERO!! We know you know what to do, it's just that we're human after all and sometimes the way we write things might come across more as know-it-mostly rather than supportive. I read the blogs of most of the people who have commented, and I think they only have your best interest in mind, as well as Beau's. Many of us aren't in any position to help a cat in Beau's position although we'd give anything to be able to. (Dangling participles, I know. Your English professor would give me a D.)
Keep up the good work, Rose!!! We're all behind you, cheering you on! We're just hecka frustrated that we can't be there to help you!!

Just my two cents for what it's worth.

Sure hope your hand is well soon. Poor Beau has had a lot of trauma and probably trusts no one now.
